Week 1 of the sermon series "Uncommon Gift": rediscovering the gift that came for us all this Christmas season.
In "The Gift No One Expected," Derrick Douglas looks at who heard the news first: shepherds, among the lowest class of their day. Gifts often come wrapped in humility. People wanted a deliverer from Roman rule; God sent a baby born in a barn and laid in a feeding trough. God uses ordinary settings for extraordinary purposes, and humble beginnings shift the glory back to Him. Unexpected packaging tests our spiritual perception, heaven's announcement came to the overlooked, and God meets you right where you are. The greatest gift meets the deepest need: reconciliation with God.
Scripture: Luke 2:8-14 (also John 1:1, 14)
Speaker: Derrick Douglas
Weekly challenge: Reflect: where might God be sending an uncommon gift you've overlooked because it's wrapped in humility? Then act: intentionally bless someone this week who is often overlooked.
