• Podcast 180 - OnX Hunt’s New Features Could Change How You Hunt
    Oct 12 2026

On this episode of The Green Way Outdoors Podcast, we sit down with Jared from OnX Hunt to break down some of the newest technology coming to hunters, including one feature that could potentially save you tens of thousands of dollars when things go wrong in the backcountry.

We start with the new OnX SOS feature powered by Overwatch Rescue. For $50 annually, hunters and outdoor adventurers can have financial coverage for qualifying rescue situations, including potentially expensive search-and-rescue and helicopter evacuations. We talk about how the system works, who it's designed for, and why it's something we're seriously considering for our own adventures around the world.

That conversation naturally leads to one of our crazier stories: the time Andy was run over by a rhino while we were filming in South Africa. Yes, there's footage.

We also dive into several other new OnX Hunt features designed to make hunters safer and more efficient in the field.

OnX's new location-sharing feature allows members of a hunting group to keep track of each other's locations, making it easier to coordinate when hunters split up, keep tabs on younger or older hunters, and know someone's last known location if they lose service.

For whitetail hunters, we get into some seriously interesting technology. OnX is using massive amounts of aggregated trail-camera data alongside factors like wind, barometric pressure, moon phase and weather conditions to help forecast deer movement and identify potentially better times to be in the woods.

We also discuss OnX's hyper-local weather technology, trail-camera integration, whitetail insights, rut information and community-generated activity reports that can give hunters a better idea of what's happening in their area.

Later in the podcast, the conversation shifts toward something extremely important to us: conservation and hunter advocacy.

We discuss some of the work happening through Green Way Conservation Club, including habitat projects in Michigan, wildlife management issues, cormorants and Great Lakes fisheries, and our goal of creating a transparent system that makes it easier for hunters and outdoorsmen to communicate directly with the people making decisions that affect wildlife, hunting and conservation.

    IN THIS EPISODE:

    • OnX Hunt's new SOS rescue coverage
    • Overwatch Rescue and backcountry emergencies
    • The real cost of helicopter evacuation
    • Live location sharing between hunters
    • Hunting safely with groups, kids and older family members
    • Deer movement forecasting
    • Trail-camera data and hunting technology
    • Hyper-local weather forecasting
    • Whitetail Insights and rut information
    • Our South Africa rhino encounter
    • Green Way Conservation Club
    • Michigan wildlife and habitat projects
    • Cormorant management and Great Lakes fisheries
    • Giving hunters a stronger voice in conservation

Whether you're a whitetail hunter, backcountry hunter, public-land hunter or simply spend a lot of time outdoors, this episode is a look at how mapping, safety technology, data and conservation are beginning to come together in ways that could fundamentally change how we hunt.

Thanks to Jared and the entire OnX team for joining us and for their continued support of The Green Way Outdoors and Green Way Conservation Club.

  • Podcast 179 -Hunting Rights, AntiHunters, Hundreds of Yellow Jackets
    Oct 12 2026

The Green Way Conservation Club has one simple idea at its core: hunters, anglers, and trappers are stronger when they stand together.

In this episode, Kyle, AJ, Jeff, and Ryan talk about why someone who never traps should still care about trapping rights, why a hunter should support an important fishing issue, and why the outdoor community cannot wait until its own favorite activity is threatened before getting involved. The people trying to restrict hunting, fishing, and trapping consistently show up and make their voices heard. The guys believe outdoorsmen need to become just as organized.

That discussion leads into Kyle’s experience at a recent NRC meeting, where he had a long, respectful conversation with someone who strongly disagreed with hunting. They debate sustenance, using what you harvest, wildlife populations, predator management, and the uncomfortable reality that managing one species can sometimes affect another. Despite completely different worldviews, Kyle emphasizes that the conversation remained respectful and that the hunters in the room gave opposing speakers the same respect while they made their case.

The bigger message is simple: supporting the outdoors cannot stop at the species, season, or activity each person personally cares about. When an issue affecting fishermen comes up, hunters need to show up. When trappers need help, anglers need to show up. And when hunting is challenged, everyone needs to remember who stood beside them when their own issue mattered.

Then Jeff changes the subject and somehow makes the episode even crazier.

While working inside his house, he hears something moving behind the drywall. The culprit turns out to be a massive yellow-jacket colony living inside the wall and ceiling. After buying a beekeeper suit and attempting to deal with the nest himself, Jeff accidentally puts his finger through a section of drywall the insects had nearly destroyed, immediately releasing dozens of yellow jackets into an open section of the house.

What follows is one of the more ridiculous home-improvement stories ever told on the podcast. Jeff builds a homemade vacuum system using hose, a bucket, soapy water, and a shop vacuum, then begins pulling hundreds of yellow jackets out of the wall. At one point there are so many insects in the bucket that their bodies form a raft on top of the water. Even after removing hundreds more, Jeff still has to eventually open the wall and find out exactly how big the colony really is.

  • Podcast 178 - Saving Michigan's Wetland Wonders - GWCC WIN
    Oct 12 2026

The Green Way Outdoors team puts the newly launched Green Way Conservation Club to work on one of Michigan’s most urgent waterfowl issues: protecting the state’s Wetland Wonders and managed waterfowl areas.

Kyle, AJ, Jeff, and Ryan begin by explaining how the Green Way Conservation Club’s free advocacy platform gives hunters, anglers, and outdoorsmen a direct way to contact the right representatives and wildlife officials. Whether someone agrees or disagrees with the club’s position, the goal is the same: make it easier for individual voices to be heard and create a true town square for Michigan’s outdoor community.

That mission quickly becomes very real when proposed staffing and budget changes threaten to dramatically reduce hunting opportunities at Michigan’s managed waterfowl areas. For Kyle, the issue is personal. He shot his first duck at one of these locations and believes they provide something incredibly important for new hunters, families, older sportsmen, experienced waterfowlers, and the migrating birds that depend on these wetlands for food and refuge.

Instead of reacting to rumors, Kyle begins making calls, researching the problem, speaking directly with the Michigan DNR, and working with State Representatives Ken Borton and David Martin to find a solution. The result is a plan for the Green Way Conservation Club and its partners to help raise the funding necessary for additional staffing, with the goal of preserving the hunting opportunities these areas provide while creating a better long-term solution for the future.

The conversation becomes an example of what the Green Way Conservation Club was created to do: bring hunters, state officials, lawmakers, and outdoor organizations together, hold everyone accountable, and solve problems without turning every conservation issue into another political fight.

The team also recognizes the organizations, donors, and individuals who have been working to protect Michigan’s managed waterfowl areas long before GWCC became involved. Within the first day of the campaign, more than 500 advocacy letters had already been sent.

Then things get considerably less serious with another round of Wacky Wildlife Wonders. The guys battle through bizarre animal trivia involving hooded seals, grudge-holding crows, coconut-carrying octopuses, foul-smelling opossums, slime-producing hagfish, and the incredible hunting technique of the thresher shark.

  • Podcast 177 - Michigan Green Way Conservation Club - GWCC Launch
    Aug 3 2026

The Green Way Conservation Club is officially here! Learn more, use the free advocacy tool, or become a founding member www.greenwayconservationclub.com In this episode of The Green Way Outdoors Podcast, Kyle, Jeff, Ryan, and AJ explain why they created the Green Way Conservation Club and how it can give Michigan hunters, anglers, trappers, and conservationists a faster, more effective way to make their individual voices heard. The club’s free advocacy platform helps users learn about important outdoor issues, identify the correct elected representatives and wildlife officials, and send a message directly from their own email account. Whether someone agrees or disagrees with the Green Way Conservation Club’s position, the system remains available for them to express their own view. The goal is to create a new town square for Michigan’s outdoor community. Hunters and anglers will not agree on every issue, but disagreement should not prevent anyone from being represented. The platform is built around open discussion, transparent opinions, individual participation, and direct communication with the people responsible for making decisions. Kyle and Ryan also share their experience working through the Michigan United Conservation Clubs proposal process and explain why they believe the state’s outdoor community needs an advocacy system that is faster, more accessible, and more transparent. The team then puts that approach into practice by examining two major Michigan issues. They break down House Bill 6008 and the debate surrounding a potential Michigan wolf season, presenting arguments from both sides before explaining the club’s final position. They also examine House Bills 5801 and 5802, including the controversy surrounding expanded commercial access to walleye, yellow perch, and lake trout in the Great Lakes. The Green Way Conservation Club is also being built to connect people with hands-on opportunities. Its upcoming Conservation Calendar will help Michigan residents find river cleanups, habitat projects, tree plantings, wildlife research, and other ways to actively support the resources they care about. Members will also be able to submit emerging concerns, participate in live discussions, receive outdoor-industry benefits, and pass unused equipment along to a new hunter or angler. This episode is ultimately a call for unity. A trout fisherman may not personally participate in bear hunting, and a deer hunter may not spend much time fishing, but every part of Michigan’s outdoor community has a responsibility to defend the others. The fight for conservation continues. The Green Way Conservation Club was created to make sure Michigan’s hunters, anglers, and conservationists have a place to speak, participate, and be heard. #GreenWayConservationClub #MichiganConservation #MichiganOutdoors #MichiganHunters #WildlifeManagement
