  • A Sub-5 Mile and a 500-Pound Squat in One Day: The Dad of Four With a Day Job - With Ben Barker
    Oct 13 2026

A Sub-5 Mile and a 500-Pound Squat in One Day: The Dad of Four With a Day Job

The most impressive thing about Ben isn’t the 500-pound squat; it’s that he does it with four kids, a full-time job, and a business on the side.

Ben Barker helps dads build their lives on faith, fitness and fatherhood, and he’s honest that he’s still working on all three. In this conversation he and Matt trade the practical: one-on-one “dates” with each kid, bringing your children into the things you already have to do, giving them a real role in the family, and getting good at apologizing when you lose your temper. For any dad starting from out of shape and overwhelmed, his advice is simple: make one small change. Start walking. Discipline begets discipline.

They also talk about why men need something hard to pursue, why performance goals beat the scale, writing your family’s core values together, and letting your kids watch you fail and try again. Then the conversation turns personal, as Matt shares what facing a second cancer has meant for him as a father, and the two talk about how to build a legacy that stays with your kids long after you’re gone.

Don’t tell your kids to have a good day; teach them to make it one.

  • One Week Before Cancer Surgery: The Story I'm Choosing to Tell Myself
    Oct 6 2026

One Week Before Cancer Surgery: The Story I'm Choosing to Tell Myself

At 18, he was wheeled down a cold, too-bright hallway to have his leg amputated. Thirteen years later, he's walking that same hallway again.

Matt recorded this in the week before surgery for a second cancer: not a return of the Ewing sarcoma he survived in 2013, but a new, stage one kidney cancer, caught early after a GI bleed in June and most likely caused by the chemotherapy that saved his life the first time. In his own words, he walks through how different this diagnosis feels. Last time the question was whether he would survive. This time the questions are about his family: can he still be the husband and father he wants to be, with his wife Lauren six months pregnant with their first son?

Plenty of people have called it the worst possible timing. Matt and Lauren chose a different story: how fortunate they are that a new life is coming, and what a gift waits on the other side. That choice is the heart of this episode. Every hardship can be told two ways, and the story you choose shapes who you become inside it. He's honest that the fear is still there; he feels it rise as he speaks. But he goes into surgery trusting the man who will wake up from it.

The key to life isn't happiness; it's peace, and peace can be built in the presence of any emotion.

Shared in Matt's own words; his diagnosis, prognosis and treatment are his personal account, not medical advice.

  • Two Veterans Are Opening a Gym for Anyone Stuck in a Dark Place - With Dave Hall and Terry Miller
    Sep 29 2026

Two Veterans Are Opening a 24-Hour Gym for Anyone Stuck in a Dark Place

Some come home from war and find the fight was never the hardest part.

Terry Miller returns to the show, this time with Dave Hall, an Army veteran with two tours in Iraq, and together they're opening Iron Valor Barbell in Reynoldsburg, Ohio: a 24-hour strength gym built around serving veterans and open to anyone who needs a place to train hard with no drama. They talk honestly about what coming home felt like without a mission; nights spent drinking just to sleep; 2020 isolation forcing a decision; and what pulled them out: goals, training, community, and finally the right counselor. Matt shares his own version: surviving cancer when he wasn't expected to, and feeling nothing when it was over.

The conversation turns to the friends they've lost to suicide, and what they tell everyone now. Get out of your head. Set a goal. Do something hard. Sleep on it. Make tomorrow count; and if you're carrying the ones you lost, live the best life you can for them.

The pain doesn't go away; it gets passed on. Pass it on into something that builds you.

Terry and Dave share their experiences in their own words, including suicide, addiction, and medication; this is their personal account, not medical advice. If you're struggling, you're not alone: call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, US) any time. Veterans: dial 988 and press 1, or text 838255 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line.

  • His First Bodybuilding Show Ever, and He Walked Off With a Pro Card - With OCB Pro Russell Holland
    Sep 22 2026

The trophy lasts a day; the individual you build to earn it lasts a lifetime.

Russell Holland lost his mother at seventeen, grew up without his father, and was working two and three jobs at a time before he realized the path he was on had only one ending. Structure saved him: a football coach who saw something worth fighting for, a scholarship to military school, and eventually the Navy. Somewhere in all of it, the gym became home. His first time on stage, after a seven-week prep he'd never put a client through today, he won his natural pro card.

In this conversation, Russ opens up about betting on himself after leaving the Navy, the peak-week details most competitors miss, why most people quit their prep by week six, what enhancement does to the mind as well as the body, and the simple Standard he coaches by: master the basics, because the basics are the hard part. He's also Diamond Decker's coach and partner; if you caught her episode, this is the other half of the story.

A poorly written plan executed every single day will beat a perfect plan executed half the time. Adherence is the Standard.

Russ shares his story in his own words, including a period of real darkness in his life. If you're struggling, you're not alone: call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, US) any time. Nutrition and peak-week figures discussed are his personal protocol for competition only; not medical or nutritional advice.

  • This Mindset took me to the Olympics...and Beyond - With Amputee Sprinter Sydney Barta
    Sep 22 2026

    All links: https://impossibleperformance.com/

Some people survive the day that changes everything; a rare few decide, in hindsight, that it was the best day they ever had.

At six years old, on a crisp and windy morning at a fun run, Sydney was standing exactly where her mother told her to wait when a race banner caught the wind and came down on her foot. Twenty-one surgeries, compartment syndrome, and four months in the hospital later, the decision was made that would define her life. She does not tell this as a tragedy; she tells it as the luckiest day she has known, because the banner missed her head, she kept her life, and in the loss she found a Purpose she is certain she would never have discovered otherwise.

What she built from there is staggering: a Paralympic sprinter at seventeen, an American record holder, a Stanford bioengineer bound for Oxford and then medical school, with the aim of becoming the orthopedic surgeon she never had — one who is also an amputee. Along the way she and Matt trade hard-won lessons on being your own advocate in a system that too often talks past the patient; on the myth of the limitation you accept before you ever test it; and on the strange, uncomfortable courage it takes to rest when every instinct says push. As their shirt reads: Limitations do not exist; almost all of them are chosen before they are ever hit.

Who's to say whether you can or cannot; but you can know, for a fact, that you can try.

  • How Squatting 500 lbs is Helping me Battle Cancer - with Matthew Hill
    Sep 15 2026

Some skills are built for years before you learn what they were being built for.

Matt opens in the warm-up room of a meet last August: 402 pounds on the bar, a hundred under his opener, and a grinding, ugly rep that nearly did not go up. In minutes he had to walk onto a platform with a hundred people watching and put 500 pounds on his back, as an amputee athlete squatting on a prosthetic rated to hold less than the weight already on him. What he describes next is not confidence and not the absence of fear. It is the skill he had actually been training under that bar for eight years: building peace within fear.

His argument is that the popular advice is simply wrong. Fear cannot be eradicated; it is woven into us the same way love and hope and faith are. There are no good emotions and no bad ones, only emotions, and every one of them carries power that will be expressed one way or another. Either it consumes you, or you build the trained capacity to stay in command of yourself inside it. He takes it through the whole meet, including the attempt he completely failed, and the turnaround minutes later that he counts among the proudest moments of his life.

Then he turns to why it matters. There are chosen impossible challenges and unchosen ones, and the chosen ones exist to build the skill for the day the unchosen arrives. A year after that lift, Matt is facing a second cancer diagnosis; stage one, and in his own words a reality he is still working to fully accept. What is different this time, he says, is that there was no paralysis, no numbness, no not knowing how to move. He closes with the three practices he is using right now: recognize the emotion, take command of your narrative, and accept every possible outcome.

Peace is not the absence of the storm; it is who you remain inside it.

Shared in Matt's own words; his diagnosis and medical situation are his personal account, not medical advice.

  • The Story You Think Doesn't Matter Is the One Someone Needs to Hear - With Matt and Austin
    Sep 1 2026

The Story You Think Doesn't Matter Is the One Someone Needs to Hear

A story untold is just potential energy at rest; the moment you tell it, that energy is released, and it never stops.

In this one, Matt and Austin step back from the guests and talk about the thing underneath all of it: the power of a Story. Why sharing yours is one of the most cathartic acts there is; why three and a half years and thousands of hours at these microphones became the closest thing either of us has had to therapy; and why the story you're most convinced is insignificant is very likely the exact one somebody out there needs in order to take their first step. We get into the physics of it, honestly: a mug at rest holds potential energy until it's pushed off the table; a story works the same way, except once the kinetic energy is released, it keeps moving, keeps landing, forever. It's why a story like Ginger's still reaches people years later, though she's no longer with us; her story is still being told, still doing good.

The Potential your story holds is your responsibility. You don't have to start a podcast; maybe you share it with a stranger in a cafe, or one close friend. But in whatever way feels good and true to you, telling it is what converts that potential into impact; on your community, on the people you love, and on the legacy you leave the ones who come after you. And it is the one asset no AI will ever replace: the story of a human life.

Your passion is built from your story; your Purpose grows from your passion; and your impact grows from there. It all starts with telling it.
