Bots now generate 57.5% of web page requests. For the first time, machines are making more requests to web pages than humans, and more of the internet is being rebuilt around them.

This isn’t the dead internet theory, because the internet is very much alive. But the thing is, more of it is being designed for AI agents, while we humans are becoming an afterthought.

Juan and Kate run the receipts: Cloudflare says bots now generate 57.5% of web requests, 18 months ahead of its CEO’s own prediction. Agentic AI traffic grew 7,851% in a single year. Stripe reports that 70% of its API commands already come from agents, and a quarter of developers now build their APIs with AI as the primary customer.

So what happens when the web’s most important users aren’t people?

When an AI agent can cancel your gym reservation because an API has zero authorization checks, and more systems are being built for agents to act on our behalf, what happens to the ad-funded, human-facing internet?

Will it even exist as we know it five years from now?
