About this listen

A podcast about hunting for history, lost treasure and ordinary people discovering extraordinary objects.

When it comes to unearthing history George Ridgway and Paul Jacobs have the pedigree.

Well, George does.

He discovered Britain's largest Claudian hoard stuffed full of gold and silver Roman and Iron Age coins.

Paul found some rusty nails and a podcasting buddy.

Join George, Paul, and one slightly unreliable Land Rover, as they search the Suffolk landscape for clues to our past.

Along the way they'll detect with the finders of some of Britain's greatest treasures, and meet people who hunt for history in unique and brilliant ways.

But it's about more than just treasure.

This is a podcast about friendship and finding peace in the landscape, about understanding our place in time, and about eternal optimism, patience and romance.

It's about the power of a pint after a day in our gorgeous countryside.

But if you want a simple way to describe it to your mates, just tell them it's about two blokes, passionate about history, bombing around in a battered old Landy, trying to understand the landscape they love.

THE LAND ROVERS: A HISTORY HUNTING PODCAST
Episode 25. Christmas with the Saxons.

In this first Christmas special the boys hit some new land they’ve got permission for - and it doesn’t get any more Christmassy.

Red House Christmas tree farm sits in the heart of an ancient landscape. Saxon ship burials, early medieval villages, and lost windmills dot the landscape, but when they explore a mystery mound they find something totally unexpected, moving and a little more modern.

THE LAND ROVERS: A HISTORY HUNTING PODCAST
Episode 24. Part 2Edge of Empire

This is the second part of our special episode in Holland, meeting and detecting with two amazing guys who discovered the Bunnik hoard.

Autumn 2023. The ancient Roman limes.

Gert-Jan and Reinier were detecting a field they’d had their eyes on for quite some time - with good reason.

One stater became two, became handfuls and handfuls of Roman aurei, denarii, and intriguingly, British Iron-Age staters of Cunobelin. It all sounded a bit familiar so we thought we better make a trip over to Holland to visit them and hear the incredible story.

THANKYOU for being amazing hosts Gert-Jan and Reinier.

And THANKYOU Anton - the archaeologist who helped unearth the hoard.
