Sandra Birchmore wanted to be a police officer. She joined a program that was supposed to bring young people closer to public service and responsible adults. Instead, the Stoughton Police Explorers became central to an internal investigation into the officers who were entrusted with her. This combined episode follows the reported manipulation in Matthew Farwell's relationship with Sandra alongside the decisions that kept the Farwell brothers inside that system.

Tony Brueski and retired FBI behavioral expert Robin Dreeke examine what prosecutors say Matthew demanded of Sandra: deleted communications, an invented older-brother explanation, and renewed loyalty after learning she had been involved with his twin William. Messages shown in court paint a painful picture of a young woman trying to understand where she stood. Behavioral analysis can explain the dynamics of authority and secrecy, but it cannot replace evidence or tell a jury what verdict to reach.

The paper trail raises another set of questions. Stoughton passed over William for employment in 2011 after its chief cited serious concerns. William joined the police force in 2017 anyway. Former Explorer-program leader Robert Devine had advocated for the twins. William subsequently testified under immunity, acknowledging his own involvement with Sandra while disputing aspects of what he knew and believed.

Then there was the January 20, 2021 warning. A friend called the department about Matthew's relationship with Sandra. Dispatcher James Fitton testified Matthew became angry and told him not to speak about the call. The note made during the call was discarded. It was another moment when the machinery of the department might have worked differently.

Matthew Farwell stands accused in federal court of killing Sandra to prevent disclosure of alleged crimes. He denies murder and has pleaded not guilty; his attorneys maintain Sandra died by suicide. The episode puts Sandra's life, the trial evidence, and years of missed institutional opportunities in the same frame.

Sandra Birchmore was failed by Matthew Farwell and by the cops around him, and I name every one of them. Sandra told William Farwell his brother had been with her when she was 15, and he texted back “Nice.” William testified Sgt. John Fanning said he needed the case like a bullet in the head. Trooper Matthew Dunne testified that nobody recorded or took notes when they questioned Farwell, and Dunne never interviewed the officers he worked with. The medical examiner never saw the lobby video, and she didn’t change her suicide ruling to undetermined until April 2026. Farwell's lawyers say Matthew Farwell went to Sandra Birchmore's Canton apartment on February 1st, 2021, to end their affair and tell her the baby wasn't his. DNA later proved he wasn't the father, and the defense says Sandra took her own life after he left. Prosecutors say the former Stoughton detective strangled her and staged a hanging.

Eric Faddis, a defense attorney and former prosecutor, answers the defense's five strongest points the way the government will in closing arguments Friday, November 6th.

The medical examiner who did the autopsy never ruled homicide. The state police lab found none of Matthew's DNA under Sandra's fingernails. The two sides' experts disagree about whether she typed the word "suicide" into a search the morning she died.

And his twin brother William testified with immunity that he had his own relationship with Sandra. The lab tied Matthew's DNA to the strap around her neck and never compared William's. The defense's DNA expert testified that could change the results.
