  • Five Skills Every Independent Expert Needs with Ford Saeks, CPAE
    Oct 7 2026

I sat down with Ford Saeks, CPAE, one of the sharpest marketing minds in the professional speaking world, to talk about what it actually takes to build a lasting expert business. Ford has been a colleague and a friend for decades. We were in Speakers Roundtable together for years. And the depth he brings to this conversation is the kind you only earn by doing the work, not just teaching it.

Two Sets of Five That Point the Same Direction

I opened with my own five areas every independent expert must develop: a clear value message, a strong brand identity, an optimum client profile, a sound business model, and the standards and systems that hold it all together. Ford came back with his own five, and the alignment was striking. He talks about a clear value proposition, a revenue model with multiple income streams, the ability to show up powerfully on screen, on stage, and on demand, a strong digital footprint, and a sales and marketing playbook you can actually execute. Different language, same roots.

    The Question That Changes Everything

Ford put it plainly: what problem do you solve that people will pay to make go away? That one question cuts through years of confusion. He also made a point I think every expert needs to hear. If you front-load your offer with bonuses, modules, and extras, you are not adding value. You are adding friction. Make it easy to start. Let the depth reveal itself over time.

    A Story Worth Sitting With

Ford shared how a payroll crisis with his sporting goods company pushed him to write a single email to 3,500 speakers. Nine people paid ten thousand dollars each. The lesson he took from that was not about the money. It was about access. People did not want the bonuses. They wanted him. That is a seed worth planting in your own thinking.

We also touched on Earl Nightingale, the Strangest Secret, and the long arc of what happens when you commit to one extra hour a day over a lifetime. In the spirit of growth.

  • Radio Hall of Fame to Disney with Sonny Melendrez
    Sep 3 2026

Sonny Melendrez joined me for one of the most joyful conversations I have had on this podcast. Sonny is a Radio Broadcasters Hall of Fame inductee, a Disney Channel pioneer, a voice artist mentored by Mel Blanc himself, and a professional speaker whose career spans more than five decades. But what struck me most was not the resume. It was the thread running through all of it: a kid in a tree house, dreaming without limits, who simply never stopped.

The Dream Does Not Wait for the Ready

Sonny grew up behind his father's barbershop, calling friends one at a time from a payphone, playing his little homemade radio shows into the receiver. He was podcasting before the word existed. What he was really doing was giving himself permission. That is the principle I kept returning to in our conversation. Dreams find people who have no idea they are ready. They found Sonny in San Antonio. They found me in Little Rock. The question is whether you give them room to grow.

Intentional Enthusiasm as a Way of Life

Sonny coined the phrase intentional enthusiasm, and he lives it fully. He reflected on three things that powered every success in his career: belief in himself, a clear vision of what he wanted, and gratitude as a daily practice. He writes his goals. He begins each morning in quiet. He treats every relationship as a door with a small glass window, waiting to be opened. That is not a technique. That is a way of being.

    What We Covered

We talked about breaking into voice work and radio with nothing but a transistor radio and a dream. We traced Sonny's path from San Antonio college radio to KMPC in Los Angeles, from Hanna-Barbera Studios with Mel Blanc to becoming the first male host on the Disney Channel. We talked about gratitude as spiritual magnetism, the Walt Disney and Mike Vance story about fulfillment, and why the child inside you is not something to outgrow.

    Find Sonny Melendrez

You can reach Sonny at sonnymelendrez.com and across all major platforms. Look him up. His story will stay with you.

    In the spirit of growth.

  • America at 250: Freedom, Faith, and Legacy with Richard Battle
    Jul 17 2026

Richard Battle joined me for one of those conversations that feels less like an interview and more like a long breakfast between old friends. Richard is the author of the Americans Who Made America series, and he lives right here in Lakeway, Texas, not far from my front door. We have known each other since our Junior Chamber of Commerce days, and that shared history gave this conversation a warmth and depth that I think you will feel from the first minute.

What America's 250th Asks of Us

Richard's books are not nostalgia. They are civics education in story form. We talked about why the founders were so brilliant, how the Connecticut Compromise and the Electoral College protect minority voices, and why a republic is not the same thing as a democracy. Aristotle said it plainly 2,500 years ago: republics decline into democracies, and democracies degenerate into despotism. That is not ancient history. That is a live warning.

    Capitalism, Fairness, and Human Nature

We explored why free enterprise, for all its imperfections, remains the most generous and life-affirming economic system ever tried. Voluntary exchange is the key phrase. No government agency required. No guilt attached. Just people freely trading the gifts they were given. We also talked about why fairness, as a governing ideal, collapses the moment you apply it to real life. Nature is not fair. An acorn does not get to choose whether it becomes an oak.

    Returning the Favor

The phrase that stayed with me longest was this one: paying it forward is an incomplete gesture. What we owe the people who built this country is not a small kindness passed to the next stranger in line. It is a full return of the blessing, passed deliberately to the generations we will never meet. That is the obligation Richard writes about, and it is the obligation I feel every time I sit down to teach.

    Books and Resources Mentioned

Richard's full library, including Americans Who Made America, Made in America, The Unopened Present, and eleven other titles, is available at richardbattle.com. All books ship signed. You can also find him on social media as RichardV Battle. V for victory.
