The Voice That Turns Back In

Sometimes, after anger has moved through the body, another voice arrives. A voice that says, you were too much. You ruined it. You should have stayed quiet. You should have handled that better.

This episode begins with the voice that turns the fire back inward.

The Voice That Turns Back In is a Sourel for the woman whose anger is followed by shame. It meets the inner critic not as an enemy, but as another protector that may have learned to keep her acceptable, connected and safe by silencing the parts that felt too strong.

This reflection gently separates responsibility from self attack. Responsibility says, something happened, and I can meet it with care. Shame says, disappear. Responsibility says, repair if needed, and do not abandon yourself. Shame says, turn against yourself before anyone else can.

The Voice That Turns Back In invites the listener to ask what the critic is afraid would happen if it did not attack so quickly. The answer may be fear of rejection, fear of being too much, fear of becoming like someone who once caused harm, or fear that anger will cost love.

This Sourel does not ask the critic to vanish. It offers a new way of helping. One where reflection does not require punishment, and connection is no longer protected through self hatred.

The Voice That Turns Back In is part of The Fire Within, a September Sourel series for women returning to the sacred wisdom beneath anger, shame, protection and the longing to stay connected without abandoning themselves.

A kinder inner voice can keep you safer than shame ever could.

If you find yourself wanting something to return to between these reflections, in the actual moment a pattern like this one takes hold, I also built an app called Settle and Source. It offers a ninety second guided practice for exactly the kind of moment this reflection has been describing, the gap between noticing an urge and knowing what to do with it. It is not a replacement for anything here, simply another door, in case it is the right one for you. https://settleandsource.com
