• How to Be a More Hopeful Neighbor: Be a Better Colleague
    Oct 1 2026

Do you hate it when they leave splattered marinara sauce in the microwave? Do you hesitate to pass the ball to them because you don’t believe they’ll make the shot? How many times did you draft that email response to make it cordial? From whence did you get these collegiality cues? You don't have to court them or be their companions in order to have camaraderie and cooperate with them, ya know.

In this fifteenth episode of season four, on common grace in culture, Chris and Kyle continue their discussion of the British spy TV series, Slow Horses. Here they focus on working Christianly with others: avoid rivalry and seek communion. The rival says, “This is my river and it’s not wide enough for me and your reputation.” The Christian says, "You need to read more Aquinas."

  • How to Be a More Hopeful Neighbor: Don't Make Your Boss God and Your Kids Swag
    Sep 12 2026

Do you dream of becoming a Wolf on Wall Street? Is having a library dedicated to you on your bucket list? Are you prepping all your kids to become President because you never could? In America today, we generally consider ambition to be a laudable pursuit. And we want to have children to perpetuate our namesake. We want the fame, and we like little mes. But ambition is a sneaky sin, a glittering vice, which we cannot mistake for determination or pertinacity. And children are not parent swag.

In this thirteenth episode of season four, on common grace in culture, Chris and Kyle discuss the British spy TV series, Slow Horses, and two recurring themes in the show: ambition and family legacy. Ambition is canvassing for attention and accolades through achievements. “Look at me! Notice me! Am I worthy? I'm worthy. Please tell me I'm worthy!” That's something you say to the Lord, not your boss. And family legacy treats kids like purses to wear at fancy events. Stop striving for the sky, you’re not an angel. And parent your kids, don’t parade them.

We can neighbor work and "we" better. Let's go and do likewise.

  • How to Be a More Hopeful Neighbor: See Your Failures as Blessings
    Aug 13 2026

You excoriated a colleague. You locked in but left the faucet on for a week. You were on full grindset but forgot to pay the bills. Have you ever made a mistake at work? Or failed? Maybe so. But can you really call an egregious error a "failure" if it can become an opportunity for growth? Or if God uses it to bless others? After all, it is only through misfortune that we can stand out as models, as Seneca eloquently put it.

In this episode of season four, on common grace in culture, Chris and Kyle discuss the British spy TV series, Slow Horses—an amusing story of a dysfunctional team of MI5 agents and their obnoxious boss. They discuss taking risks at work, believing that the Lord has a particular purpose for you, and why aura farming with holes in your socks is impossible. Neighbor better.

  • How to Be a More Hopeful Neighbor: Have Another Beer (Part 2)
    Jul 10 2026

As the monks tend their barley fields and ferment their yeast, they remind us that stewardship is not abstract theology but a daily, delectable act of worship—bringing creation (and a good grains) to its joyful, God-intended end. A profound practice of creation care as they shepherd grapes, grain, water, and land. They also know how to practice silence in a noisy, overstimulated world.

In this episode, Chris and Kyle continue their conversation with Marty Tomzak, author of Time, Silence, and Yeast—transitioning to sacramental stewardship and silence. Head on over to Whole Foods and grab a Trappist beer (or a Voodoo Ranger), settle in, and join us for a conversation that tastes like communion: earthy, thoughtful, hopeful, and full of ordinary grace.

  • How to Be a More Hopeful Neighbor: Drink More Beer (Part 1)
    Jul 4 2026

As the ancient Israelites advanced toward Canaan, during the latter phase of the exodus, be'er (בְּאֵר) served as a pivotal staging point where the people rested and received divine provision. “From there they went to Beer, the well where the LORD said to Moses, ‘Gather the people together so that I may give them water’” (Numbers 21:16). Did you know that "beer" means "well?" Well, well, well.

In this tenth episode of season four, Chris and Kyle do an excast and interview Marty Tomszak, Lecturer of Religious Studies at Valparaiso University. They talk beer and hospitality, how monastic practices can make us better parents, and how being in a foreign land can inform our sense of stewardship. It's a juicy convo, so make sure you have a few paper towels at hand.

  • How to Be a More Hopeful Neighbor: Stop Trying to Be Alone
    Jun 26 2026

Being alone will give you vertigo. You'll get lost in your own head and your eyes will cease to cooperate with reality's demand. You'll probably start to enjoy blurriness. Like espousing the belief that living alone is the same thing as loneliness. Or "love" is just another word for "obsession." Wake up! We were not made for individualism and the infatuation it begets.

In this tenth episode of season four, on common grace in culture, Chris and Kyle discuss Alfred Hitchcock’s film, Vertigo, and how it applies to hopeful neighboring. Believe in reality. Don't be gullible. Remember that the new heavens and the new earth will have to be populated, so don't idolize chastity or celibacy. Also—don't wander for too long. You have a home, and there are neighbors there.

  • How to Be a More Hopeful Neighbor: Take Care of Your Homestead
    Jun 12 2026

Why don't cats ever smile? Shouldn't eggs last longer than a month? How come turkeys don't know camping etiquette? Have you ever sat there—delighting in a sip on your coffee—only to be interrupted by robin refuse—worm, feces, dirt? How did things get so screwed up? Surely it couldn't have been by accident. The Fall is real, and we can see, hear, smell, taste, and feel it all around us.

In this ninth episode of season four, on common grace in culture, Chris and Kyle continue their mini-series on Alfred Hitchcock films. This episode they analyze Hitchcock's film, The Birds. You can make hats and tweed jackets and Thanksgiving dinner all you want. But you're still going to wrestle with original sin, ad hoc ethics and eschatological implications. How's that going for ya? We got you.

  • How to Be a More Hopeful Neighbor: Confess—Just Not Everything
    Jun 4 2026

Wouldn't it be ideal and idyllic to live in a society in which we don't have any secrets? Any and all information would just float out there in the ether for the taking—even by apes, angels, and aliens. Silly mistakes could hang on drying racks for the whole world to see. Everyone would know your business, and there would be no judgment. No shame. No pity.

In this eight episode of season four, on common grace in culture, Chris and Kyle continue their mini-series on Alfred Hitchcock films. This episode they analyze Hitchcock's film, I Confess. Christians have to tell the truth—because Christ is the Truth (John 14:6). But the whole truth? And quickly? Perhaps there's room to be forthright and precise without spilling your guts. Which might actually bring hope to a community.
