Making nouns from adjectives by using the definite article - Criando substantivos a partir de adjetivos usando o artigo definido.

We can change some adjectives to nouns by using the definite article - Podemos mudar alguns adjetivos para substantivos usando o artigo definido.

These nouns are always plural. - Esses substantivos são sempre plurais.

adjective - adjetivo

rich - rico

poor - pobre

unemployed - desempregado

homeless - sem teto

noun - substantivo

the rich = os ricos - rich people in general

the poor = os pobres - poor people in general

the unemployed = os desempregados - unemployed people in general

the homeless = os sem teto - homeless people in general

eg.

The unemployed are often helped by the government - Os desempregados são muitas vezes ajudados pelo governo.

city centre - Centro da cidade

suburbs - subúrbios, zona afastada do centro da cidade

A region is a particular part of a country - Uma região é uma parte específica de um país.

An area is a particular part of a town or city - Uma área é uma parte específica de uma cidade pequena ou uma cidade grande.

industry - indústria, negócio

agriculture - agricultura

Industrial - industrial

Agricultural - agrícola

A farmer works in agriculture - Um agricultor trabalha na área da agricultura.

A factory worker works in industry - Um operário trabalha no ramo da indústria.

society - sociedade, comunidade, associação

social - social

Society means everyone who lives in a particular country, area or city. Society can also mean people in general - SOCIETY significa todos que vivem em um determinado país, área ou cidade. SOCIETY também pode significar pessoas em geral.

eg.

Drugs and crime are some of the biggest dangers to society - As drogas e o crime são alguns dos maiores perigos para a sociedade.

We use the adjective social when we talk about relationships between people or groups of people - Usamos o adjetivo SOCIAL quando falamos de relacionamentos entre pessoas ou grupos de pessoas.

Unemployment is an example of a social problem - O desemprego é um exemplo de problema social.

Apostrophe - apóstrofe

We use an apostrophe with the possessive ’S - Usamos apóstrofe com o possessivo ‘S.

eg.

This is Andy’s book - Este é o livro do Andy.

When the noun is plural, the apostrophe comes after the S - Quando o substantivo está no plural, a apóstrofe vem depois do S.

eg.

The boys’ shirts were very dirty - As camisas dos meninos estavam muito sujas.

With irregular plurals or plural words without S, the apostrophe comes before the S - Com plurais irregulares ou palavras no plural sem S, a apóstrofe vem antes do S.

eg.

The children’s books were on the floor - Os livros das crianças estavam no chão.

We use an apostrophe with contractions - Usamos apóstrofe com contrações.

eg.

I can’t speak French - Eu não sei falar francês.

He’s got a new mobile phone - Ele tem um celular novo.

They didn’t go on holiday last year - Eles não saíram de férias no ano passado.

We use an apostrophe when we talk about time in the future - Usamos apóstrofe quando falamos de tempo no futuro.

eg.

In 1 year’s time = 1 year in the future - Daqui a 1 ano = 1 ano no futuro

In 2 years’ time = 2 years in the future - Daqui a 2 anos = 2 anos no futuro

In 10 minutes’ time = 10 minutes in the future - Em 10 minutos = 10 minutos no futuro
