About this listen

Voices Behind the Lens is a 6-week Health, Healing, Hampton Roads takeover. Connected by the commitment to improving their community, our hosts, Darrell Redmon, and Fitzroy Smith, use their backgrounds as a formerly incarcerated man and reverend to create a safe space to talk about the impacts of living in the underserved communities of Portsmouth. From the city of Portsmouth’s Commonwealth Attorney to a mural artist who beat a drug addiction, plus a white woman who passionately advocates for other white people to check their privilege; this series features a diverse set of guests with unique individual stories with connected passion around the improvement of our communities. Join us this summer as we shift the spotlight to conversations around showcasing how we can individually and collectively turn pain into a purpose. Jul 30 2024

We pick up the final episode of Voices Behind the Lens Season 1 in the middle of a passionate off-mic conversation with host Darrell Redmond. Over the 2024 4th of July holiday, one of his family homes was shot up with over 20 bullets. Darrell pleads on how we bring in others to care about gun violence - even if it's not directly impacting the places they live, work, play, and call home. Speaking to his co-host and audio engineer, he tells the church and academic community how they can help - by showing up on the front lines outside of their comfort zones.
