    Matthew 28:16-20

Living in the community of the Trinity

28:16Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.

28:17When they saw him, they worshiped him, but they doubted.

28:18And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

28:19Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit

28:20and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

    Numbers 11:24-30

The spirit rests on Israel's leaders

11:24So Moses went out and told the people the words of the LORD, and he gathered seventy of the elders of the people and placed them all around the tent.

11:25Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to him and took some of the spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders, and when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied. But they did not do so again.

11:26Two men remained in the camp, one named Eldad and the other named Medad, and the spirit rested on them; they were among those registered, but they had not gone out to the tent, so they prophesied in the camp.

11:27And a young man ran and told Moses, "Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp."

11:28And Joshua son of Nun, the assistant of Moses, one of his chosen men, said, "My lord Moses, stop them!"

11:29But Moses said to him, "Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the Lord's people were prophets and that the LORD would put his spirit on them!"

11:30And Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.

    Acts 17:22-31

    Paul's message to the Athenians

17:22Then Paul stood in front of the Areopagus and said, "Athenians, I see how extremely spiritual you are in every way.

17:23For as I went through the city and looked carefully at the objects of your worship, I found among them an altar with the inscription, 'To an unknown god.' What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you.

17:24The God who made the world and everything in it, he who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by human hands,

17:25nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mortals life and breath and all things.

17:26From one ancestor he made all people to inhabit the whole earth, and he allotted the times of their existence and the boundaries of the places where they would live,

17:27so that they would search for God and perhaps fumble about for him and find him--though indeed he is not far from each one of us.

17:28For 'In him we live and move and have our being'; as even some of your own poets have said, 'For we, too, are his offspring.'

17:29"Since we are God's offspring, we ought not to think that the deity is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of mortals.

17:30While God has overlooked the times of human ignorance, now he commands all people everywhere to repent,

17:31because he has fixed a day on which he will have the world judged in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead."

    John 14:1-14

    Christ the way, truth, life

14:1"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.

14:2In my Father's house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?

14:3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also.

14:4And you know the way to the place where I am going."

14:5Thomas said to him, "Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?"

14:6Jesus said to him, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

14:7If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him."

14:8Philip said to him, "Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied."

14:9Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'?

14:10Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own, but the Father who dwells in me does his works.

14:11Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, but if you do not, then believe because of the works themselves.

14:12Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father.

14:13I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

14:14If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

    Life among the Believers

43 Awe came upon everyone because many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 All who believed were together and had all things in common; 45 they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds[a] to all, as any had need. 46 Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home[b] and ate their food with glad and generous[c] hearts, 47 praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

    Luke 24:13-35

Now on that same day two of Jesus' disciples were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, “What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?” They stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?” He asked them, “What things?” They replied, “The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him.” Then he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?” Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.

As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. But they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.” So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?” That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!” Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

    John 20:19-31

19When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." 20After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." 22When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." 24But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe." 26A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." 27Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe." 28Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" 29Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe." 30Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. 31But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.
