God’s law can feel like a threat until you understand what it’s actually doing. Continuing our From Guilty to Glory series through Romans, we return to Romans 7 for part two on God’s law and why Scripture insists the problem is not the commandment, but the sin hiding in us.

We walk through how the law reveals sin, arouses sin, and even ruins the sinner by shattering self-righteousness. Paul’s words explain that stubborn reflex we all recognize: the moment we hear “you shall not,” something in us wants to push back. Dr. Timothy Mann uses vivid images, including Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, to show how the law doesn’t cleanse the heart by itself, but it does make sin unmistakable and unbearable, which is exactly why faithful preaching must not skip over sin and judgment to get to “life tips” and inspiration.

From there, we talk about what genuine salvation looks like over time: not a casual attitude toward sin, but a growing love for God’s law as a guide, real repentance that means forsaking, and a deeper dependence on Jesus Christ as the only true righteousness. We close with the powerful poem “Jehovah Tsidkenu,” pointing to the ultimate purpose of the law: driving sinners to faith in Christ.
