About this listen

John Cuturilo, the counsellor of Your Listener Counselling in Melbourne, Australia, is the host of the Your Listener podcast. Discussing psychological topics including mental health, critical thinking, and social matters, he presents unique insights. Rather than lecturing coercively on what to believe, filling his discussions with provocative language or quotes from famous people, or political rhetoric, John explains how our minds work and the impact of this on how we operate individually and socially. He often helps his audience to realise that what we assume are truths are often ideas resulting from errors in thinking — to which all of us may fall subject. Through this, John encourages critical thinking, accepting responsibility for our flaws, the separation of criticising ideas from judging people, exercising our minds, and finding ways to live in harmony with and learn from each other rather than avoiding those who think differently. He also believes in helping his audience to develop more detailed, complex knowledge, rather than overly simplifying concepts to the extent that they become empty slogans. He maintains that while the quest for truth may never be completed, we should still strive to learn of it as only by doing this will we be the most independent and astute possible thinkers.
