Ghalib is the greatest Urdu poet and one of the greatest in any Indian language. He would rank perhaps among the great poets of the world. With Meer Ghalib, Iqbal and Faiz, to name only four, the firmament of Urdu poetry is truly star studded, with numerous starlets strewn around. Ghalib has not only a pride of place among them; his stature is growing with every passing decade. In fact it is well nigh impossible to do full justice to his poetry, particularly the ghazal in translation. The best that could be done was to translate the verses into independent rhymed couplets.

मीर तक़ी मीर भारतीय कविता के उन बड़े नामों में से हैं, जिन्होंने लोगों के दिलो-दिमाग़ में स्थान बनाया हुआ है। अपनी शायरी को दर्द और ग़म का मज़मूआ बताते हुए मीर ने यह भी कहा है कि मेरी शायरी ख़ास लोगों की पसन्द की ज़रूर है, लेकिन 'मुझे गुफ़्तगू अवाम से है।' और अवाम से उनकी यह गुफ़्तगू इश्क की हद तक है। इसलिए उनकी इश्किया शायरी भी उर्दू शायरी के परम्परागत चौखटे में नहीं अँट पाती। इन्सानों से प्यार करके ही वे ख़ुदा तक पहुँचने की बात करते हैं, जिससे इस राह में मुल्ला-पंडितों की भी कोई भूमिका नज़र नहीं आती।
