Johann Joachim Winckelmann, 1717 im altmärkischen Stendal geboren, galt Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts als die europäische Kapazität in Sachen antiker Kunst. Ein auch in Rom hochangesehener Mann, hatte er seit 1763 die Oberaufsicht über die klassischen Altertümer inne. Im April 1768 trat er eine längere Deutschlandreise an, brach sie jedoch ab und fuhr von Wien, wo er von der Kaiserin empfangen worden war, zurück nach Triest, um von dort nach Venedig überzusetzen.
