Von der Mobilmachung bis zur Niederlage entsteht so ein Echolot jener Tage: Trennungsschmerz und patriotisches Hoch, Todesangst und Heldenmut, Freudengesänge und das nackte Grauen stehen unmittelbar nebeneinander.

Après "La Grande Guerre" coédité en 1999 par l'Historial et Frémeaux & Associés avec le concours de Radio France offrant une mise en perspective de documents phonographiques de l'époque avec des témoignages de poilus, il était logique de continuer ce travail de muséographie sonore à destination du public en éditant le travail réalisé par l'Institut des Archives Sonores avec le concours de l'INA, qui présente près de quatre heures d'enregistrements permettant d'entendre pour la première fois la majorité des acteurs historiques de l'époque.
