Published in the summer of 1949, George Orwell’s 1984 is one of the most definitive texts of modern literature. Set in Oceania, one of the three intercontinental super states that divided the world amongst themselves after a global war, Orwell’s masterful critique of the political structures of the time, works itself out through the story of Winston Smith, a man caught in the webs of a dystopian future, and his clandestine love affair with Julia, a young woman he meets during the course of his work for the government.

Stürmische Überfahrt: 10 Erzählungen (1929-1930) von Francis Scott Fitzgerald, gelesen von Ingolf Kloss. Von 1930 bis 1931, als der Roman Tender Is the Night (Zärtlich ist die Nacht) noch unvollendet war, schrieb Fitzgerald einige Josephine Perry-Geschichten, die sich um ein junges Mädchen, Basils weibliches Gegenstück, drehten. Obwohl Fitzgerald die Absicht hatte, die vierzehn Geschichten um Basil Lee und Josephine Perry in einem einzigen Werk zusammenzufassen, gelang ihm dies zu Lebzeiten nicht.

Auch in diesen 12 Erzählungen geht es um das Streben nach Glück und Erfolg, die Verwirklichung des amerikanischen Traumes und dessen Scheitern. Die Gegensätze arm und reich, treu und untreu stehen im Mittelpunkt dieser Geschichten und Gesellschaftsporträts. Einen Schwerpunkt bilden in dieser Zusammenstellung allerdings die Basil-Geschichten. 1928, während er mit seinem Roman "Zärtlich ist die Nacht" kämpfte, begann Fitzgerald eine Reihe von Geschichten über Basil Duke Lee zu schreiben, eine fiktionalisierte Version seines jüngeren Ichs.

Kurt Tucholsky: Seine Texte sind scharf, ironisch, melancholisch, lustig - und brandaktuell, obwohl sie teilweise schon einhundert Jahre alt sind. Das Beste aus den Jahren 1929 - 1930 von dem Mann, der sich so am Thema Deutschland abarbeitete - und dessen Liebe zu seiner Heimat sich zwischen den Zeilen immer zeigte.
