Il trattato spiega i Tarocchi in modo analogico, facendone la storia e confrontando le conclusioni personali dell'autore con quelle di altri esoteristi e studiosi.

L'interesse di P. D. Ouspensky per i tarocchi risale ai primissimi anni del Novecento, e precede l'incontro con Gurdjieff. Affascinato dalla misteriosa struttura delle carte, nel 1913 pubblica questo breve saggio in cui racconta, con stile poetico e immaginativo, la macchina filosofica rappresentata dai 22 arcani maggiori. Nell'interpretazione del filosofo russo, i tarocchi sono un vero e proprio "libro" di simbolismo ermetico che permette di accedere a un mondo più ampio e profondo.
