In 1844, Alexandre Dumas published The Three Musketeers, a novel so famous and still so popular today that it scarcely needs introduction. Shortly thereafter he wrote a sequel, Twenty Years After, that resumed the adventures of his swashbuckling heroes. Later, toward the end of his career, Dumas wrote The Red Sphinx, another direct sequel to The Three Musketeers that begins not 20 years later but a mere 20 days afterward. The Red Sphinx picks up right where the The Three Musketeers left off.

As part of the d'Artagnan Romances following The Three Musketeers and Twenty Years After, and devoted in large part to romantic events at the court of France's King Louis XIV, Louise de La Valliere is the second part of Alexandre Dumas's 268 chapter novel The Vicomte de Bragelonne: Ten Years Later, which first appeared in serial form between 1847 and 1850.

Questo ultimo romanzo di Charlotte Bronte è da alcuni considerato il suo capolavoro; da molti la sua opera più matura sia come contenuti che come modernità di scrittura. Henry James (1843-1916) è stato uno scrittore americano noto per i romanzi già strutturati in modo moderno: l’uso del punto di vista soggettivo, del monologo interiore ne sono testimoni. Nato in una famiglia di intellettuali, in questo romanzo, pubblicato nel 1880, è portato a insistere più su sensazioni, pensieri, motivazioni, che non su dialoghi e azioni.

Eugène Sue (1804 -1857) è stato uno scrittore francese, noto soprattutto per i suoi romanzi d'appendice a carattere sociale: I misteri di Parigi furono pubblicati a puntate nel Journal des débats , nel 1842-1843 suscitando un enorme interesse, tanto in Francia che all'estero. Questa edizione italiana del 1935 è ridotta, per rispettare i gusti del pubblico italiano dell’epoca; ha mantenuto però intatta la struttura dell’opera e l’avvincente intreccio e caratterizzazione dei personaggi.
