Detective Inspector Tom Brand has moved from London to his childhood home in the sleepy village of Relby to look after his elderly father and take a job as lead detective in the village's new police station. Before he has a chance to settle into his new life, tragedy strikes. Two twelve-year-old boys pretending to be detectives in a mysterious game disappear. Tom is thrown into the most important case of his career. Families are torn apart by the disappearance of the boys, and the only clues are frustratingly indecipherable.

Biff Brewster receives a mysterious, urgent telegram from his uncle, Charles Keene, from Martinique, asking him to come quickly. Biff's parents reluctantly allow Biff to make the trip. During the airline trip, Biff meets another boy, Derek, who looks like Biff. After making friends on the flight, they decide to play a trick on Biff's uncle by exchanging identities. The exchanged identity backfires as Biff is kidnapped by thieves hoping to find and steal a pearl fishery that Dere's father has discovered.
