In den frühen 2000ern erkennt Michael Tolliver die Stadt an der Bucht kaum wieder. Gestern gehörte er noch zu den Pionieren der Schwulenrechtsbewegung, heute fährt die Straßenbahn die Touristen sogar bis in sein geliebtes Castro-Viertel. Irgendwie hat die Zeit ihn eingeholt. Die Haare sind ergraut, er hat einen Bauch bekommen, und der Rücken macht auch nicht mehr alles mit.

Mary Ann Singleton kehrt nach San Francisco zurück, leider aus traurigem Anlass: Sie hat Krebs. Zu Hause will sie sich nicht behandeln lassen, erst recht nicht, seit sie bei einem Skype-Chat live miterleben musste, wie ihr Mann sie mit ihrer persönlichen Lebensberaterin betrog.
