The story follows Holmes as he investigates a puzzling series of incidents where a man repeatedly smashes plaster busts of Napoleon, with no apparent motive beyond destruction. It was first published in Collier's in the US on April 30, 1904, and in The Strand Magazine in the UK in May 1904.
