Im vierten Teil seiner "Geschichte der abendländischen Philosophie" führt August Messer in bündiger und verständlicher Art und Weise in die Philosophien von Immanuel Kant, Johann Gottlieb Fichte, Friedrich Wilhelm Schelling und Georg Friedrich Wilhelm Hegel ein - also in die Gedankenwelten jener Philosophen, die seit Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts als "Deutscher Idealismus" in einen Zusammenhang zueinander gebracht werden, welcher der Eigenständigkeit ihrer philosophischen Systeme nicht in jedem Falle gerecht wird.

Eine Darstellung, die heute vergessen ist, vor hundert Jahren bei ihrem Erscheinen aber viel gelesen wurde und sich großer Beliebtheit erfreute, ist die fünfbändige "Geschichte der Philosophie" von August Messer. August Messer war Professor für Philosophie und Pädagogik in Gießen. Er gehörte zudem der sogenannten Würzburger Schule an, eine Gruppe von Psychologen und Philosophen, die zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts Forschungen im Bereich der Kognitionspsychologie betrieben, damals noch Denkpsychologie genannt.
