B. B. Warfield critiques claims of miraculous divine healing and other supernatural gifts in the post-apostolic church. He argues that true miracles ceased with the close of the apostolic age, and he debunks purported signs and wonders from the patristic era through his own time. Warfield maintains that while God still is at work in the world, He now acts through providential means rather than through immediate, miraculous intervention.

Frederick Brotherton Meyer (1847-1929) was a Baptist pastor and evangelist in England involved in ministry and inner city mission work on both sides of the Atlantic. He was a friend of D. L. Moody and A. C. Dixon, and the author of numerous religious books and articles. Referring constantly to scripture in "The Secret of Guidance", Meyer calls on believers to examine their inner motives, to consider how they ought to be receptive to God’s guidance. The book emphasizes spiritual formation and the practical application of Christian precepts in daily life.

A.B. Simpson, the founder of an Evangelical Protestant denomination, the Christian and Missionary Alliance, remains a popular author among all Christian denominations. His book Danger Lines in the Deeper Life explores some of the conflicts that Christians encounter in trying to maintain a spiritual life, with reference to the book of Judges. Unlike in his usual inspirational writing, Simpson here points out the flaws of the institutional church and the compromises it reaches with worldly challenges.
