Währenddessen haben Cap und Larissa herausgefunden, wer tatsächlich hinter dem Anschlag auf das Weizenfeld steckt: Lawrence Huggins im Auftrag von SpaceSeed. Die beiden zweifeln immer mehr an den Absichten der Kopernikus-Führung. Wem können sie noch trauen? Vielleicht Ludd und seinen Anhängern?

Ein Camp nahe Berlin: Hier sucht die Biotechnologiefirma SpaceSeed neue Feldarbeiter für ihre Raumstation Kopernikus. Um seine Schwester vor der Rekrutierung zu retten, meldet Cap Hallberg sich freiwillig. Doch auf halber Strecke zur Kopernikus geraten er und die zwei anderen Rekruten Michael und Larissa in eine Wolke aus Weltraumschrott, der den Frachter schwer beschädigt und sogar ein Loch in die Außenhülle reißt. Und während die drei um ihr Leben kämpfen, erwartet Lawrence Huggins den Frachter schon ungeduldig.
