For a brief moment in the summer of 1900, Robert Charles was arguably the most infamous Black man in the United States. After an altercation with police on a New Orleans street, Charles killed two police officers and fled. During a manhunt that extended for days, violent White mobs roamed the city, assaulting African Americans and killing at least half a dozen. When authorities located Charles, he held off a crowd of thousands for hours before being shot to death.

In the introduction, anthologist Douglas Sladen stated that the purpose of this collection was "to lay before the English public a selection of poems inspired by life and scenery in Australia". He further comments, "This volume is essentially the work of people who have meditated in the open air and not under the lamp; and if its contents oftentimes want the polish that comes only with much midnight oil, they are mostly a transcript from earth and sea and sky, and not from books."

Story0
After his interest was piqued by a 19th-century photo of a camel train in a country town, Ryan Butta found himself on the trail of Australia’s earliest Afghan camel-drivers. Separating the bulldust from the bush poetry, he reveals the breadth and depth of white Australian protectionism and prejudice. Told with flair and authority, this gritty alternative history defies the standard horse-powered folklore to reveal the untold debt this country owes to humble dromedaries, their drivers and those who brought them here.

Gather round, children, for a magical journey awaits you! In this enchanting collection, I share the tales that have captivated hearts for centuries. Long ago, wandering minstrels roamed the hills and valleys, their songs echoing from courts to cottages, captivating both nobles and common folk alike. With their harps in hand, these storytellers spun enchanting ballads of fairies flitting over mountains, as well as stirring songs of valor and strife. Their melodies painted vivid pictures of joy and sorrow, love and loss, weaving a rich tapestry of life. It is from the ancient tomes that I ...

On a frigid February evening in 1805, Amos Babcock brutally murdered Mercy Hall. Believing that he was being instructed by God, Babcock stabbed and disemboweled his own sister before dumping her lifeless body in a rural New Brunswick snowbank. This is the tragic and fascinating story of how isolation, duplicity, and religious mania turned impoverished, hardworking people violent, leading to a murder and an execution.

Welcome all you wonderful people, and thank you so much for checking out Bawdy Ballads, where we will explore all the dirty, sassy, and usually surprising old popular songs, and when I say old… I mean old. Four hundred years old old. And along the way we’ll explore all those things that make life a bit more interesting. There’s trickery infidelity, loving, drinking, and fighting. While we dig deep in these songs, we’ll talk about all kinds of things: archetypes, history, folklore, and how so many of these songs hold vast potential for inspiration of new creations.

Story0
This is a True Crime podcast that focuses on murders, solved or unsolved. We will occasionally break our own rules when that catches out fancy and cover something that may not exactly be a murder. We would like to warn anyone listening that we do cover sensitive content and it's usually presented to the co-hosts with little to no knowledge of the case details so that their responses and reactions are genuine. And we tend to do all this with some dark humor. So, if this doesn't work for you, we understand. There are a lot of other podcasts out there for you to enjoy. However, if you ...
