Bei der Sitzung des US-Luftschiffer-Clubs im Weldon-Institut in Philadelphia behauptet Erfinder Robur, dass die Ballone langsam und unlenkbar seien und die Zukunft allein Fluggeräten aus Metall gehöre. Wütend gehen die Ballonfahrer auf ihn los. Robur flieht, entführt den Präsidenten des Clubs samt Sekretär und Diener in seine Flugmaschine, genannt "Albatros". Eine abenteuerliche Luftreise beginnt.
