In november 1943 wordt Renata Laqueur, dochter van een Pruisische hoogleraar en van Joodse afkomst, met haar man Paul Goldschmidt gearresteerd. Ze komt terecht in doorgangskamp Westerbork en vier maanden later worden ze samen overgebracht naar kamp Bergen-Belsen in Duitsland. Laqueur maakte altijd al aantekeningen wanneer ze op reis was. En hoe cru ook, zij ziet haar gedwongen vertrek naar Bergen-Belsen op dat moment als een soort reis.
