Penny Parker’s father is a car accident victim and is taken to a hospital by another driver. However, they never arrive and the widowed father, Anthony Parker, is struck by brain damage with memory loss. At one point he cannot remember his own name nor recognize Penny as his daughter. He is owner and publisher of The Riverview Star newspaper and is pursuing information concerning a car-theft gang. Fortunately, the time element is overcome for his recovery and this leads to thwarting the plans of the unscrupulous gang.

"Beyond the Bayou" is about La Folle, an African American woman and former slave, who overcomes her crippling and irrational childhood fear of passing an imaginary territorial line or going beyond the bayou.

After an explanation of how the magic umbrella works, the two children, joined by Cap'n Bill, decide to take a trip to a nearby island. They call it "Sky Island" because it looks like it's "halfway in the sky"—but the umbrella takes them to a different place entirely, a literal island in the sky.

The novel involves Mayre Griffiths, nicknamed Trot, or sometimes Tiny Trot, who is a little girl who lives on the coast of southern California. Her father is the captain of a sailing schooner, and her constant companion is Cap'n Bill Weedles, a retired sailor with a wooden leg.
