Si compone di una carrellata di personaggi e di descrizioni dettagliate dei luoghi attraversati dalla piccola Nell e da suo nonno, nella loro fuga da Londra. Oliver Twist fu il secondo romanzo di Dickens, pubblicato a puntate mensili dal 1837 al 1839. E' una delle opere più famose dello scrittore, primo romanzo inglese ad avere un ragazzo come protagonista e uno dei primi romanzi sociali. L'umorismo feroce con cui Dickens descrive la società inglese, la povertà, l'abuso infantile, l'ipocrisia della cultura fu decisamente una novità.

Grandi speranze è considerato uno dei più grandi e più sofisticati romanzi di Dickens; ebbe inoltre più di 250 adattamenti sul palcoscenico e sullo schermo. Fu pubblicato a puntate fra il 1860 e il 1861, ed è come altri romanzi di Dickens la storia di un percorso di crescita morale di un ragazzo che viene seguito, nel racconto, dall'eta di 7 anni all'età di 35 anni.

Casa Desolata è il nono romanzo di Dickens. Non è uno dei romanzi più noti di Dickens, certamente è uno dei più complessi, con una grandissima quantità di personaggi, che vengono presentati dettagliatamente nella prima parte del romanzo, per poi ritrovarne le vite intrecciate in trame insospettabili. Inoltre, più che in altri romanzi, lo scrittore coglie l’occasione per denunciare l’indifferenza verso la povertà e l’ingiustizia presenti nella società dell’epoca.

Ultima opera compiuta di Dickens, la storia si snoda lungo il Tamigi, testimone e causa di morti. Ma la storia non è cupa come il suo inizio potrebbe far sembrare; la morale sui danni della cupidigia è evidente, il lieto fine inevitabile. La scrittura è qui più moderna, ironica, graffiante, quando tratta delle ipocrisie e inutilità della "vita di società" della borghesia.

L'opera (qui nella traduzione di Silvio Spaventa Filippi) fu scritta a puntate, come le precedenti, nel 1843-44, ma la tiratura delle copie fu circa la metà dei precedenti successi di Dickens, per cui ci fu una rottura con gli editori che costrinsero Dickens a rimborsare il denaro da loro spesi. Dickens cambiò allora il titolo dell'opera in "America", approffittando del suo viaggio in America per inserire una satira di quel continente e dei suoi abitanti, satira tanto più feroce in quanto sentiva che il nuovo mondo aveva distrutto delle illusioni di quanti speravano di vedervi realizzati i propri ideali.

"Il circolo Pickwick" è forse il più famoso romanzo di Dickens. Pubblicato nel 1836, fu il suo primo romanzo, nato inizialmente per accompagnare delle vignette umoristiche, e in seguito diventato protagonista sul disegno. Romanzo a episodi, mantiene, pur nella sua struttura di avventure separate, un collegamento fra i vari personaggi, che sono quanto mai "dickensiani": caratteristici, buoni anche quando sono cattivi, e descritti sempre con bonarietà.

John Harmon returns from exile expecting to receive an inheritance, but knows that he must marry a stranger, Bella Wilfer, in order to collect. He fakes his own death and takes on a new identity in order to observe her first. Some of the memorable characters in this, the last completed Dickens novel, include Bella who, unlike other Dickens heroines, cannot be accused of unnatural virtue; the insolent barrister Eugene Wrayburn; the amiable Boffin; and the rascal Silas Wegg.
