Свидетельство багдадских писателей X века о существовании в их время арабской книги сказок "Тысячи и одной ночи" подтверждается наличием отрывка из этой книги, относящегося к IX веку. В дальнейшем литературная эволюция сборника продолжалась вплоть до XIV-XV веков.

От самых ранних сборников "Книги тысячи и одной ночи" сохранились лишь одиночные сказки, не входящие в "египетскую" редакцию и представленные в немногих рукописях отдельных томов "ночей" или существующие в виде самостоятельных рассказов, имеющих, однако, - разделение на ночи.

Более позднего происхождения группа сказок сборника "Тысяча и одна ночь" - отражающих жизнь и быт средневекового арабского торгового города. Как это видно из некоторых топографических подробностей, действие в них разыгрывается главным образом в столице Египта - Каире.

Наиболее поздними по времени создания являются сказки плутовского жанра, по-видимому включенные в сборник в Египте, при его последней обработке.

Многие исследователи пришли к выводу, что "Тысячу и одну ночь" более целесообразно, чем по географическому принципу, объединить, хотя бы и условно, в группы по времени создания или же по принадлежности к социальной среде, где они бытовали.

Последним компилятором сборника "Тысячи и одной ночи" был неизвестный по имени ученый шейх, который составил в XVIII веке в Египте наиболее позднее по времени собрание сказок "Тысячи и одной ночи".

Сказки "Тысячи и одной ночи" принадлежащие к той или иной группе, родившись в определенной социальной среде, естественно имели в этой среде и наибольшее распространение.

Отрицательное отношение к "Тысячи и одной ночи" реакционно настроенных арабских филологов XIX века печально отразилось на судьбе ее печатных изданий.
