Enigma est une machine électromécanique portable servant au chiffrement et au déchiffrement de l'information. Elle fut inventée par l'Allemand Arthur Scherbius, reprenant un brevet du Néerlandais Hugo Koch, datant de 1919. Son utilisation la plus célèbre fut celle faite par l'Allemagne nazie et ses alliés, avant et pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la machine étant réputée inviolable selon ses concepteurs.

Oleg Penkovsky était un colonel du GRU soviétique arrêté et condamné pour avoir transmis à l'Ouest une multitude de secrets sur les armes nucléaires soviétiques et sur son service d'espionnage. Son arrestation donna lieu à un procès à grand spectacle. Lors de la crise des missiles de Cuba, il donna au MI6 l'information que l'URSS ne disposait en réalité que de très peu de missiles nucléaires stratégiques et que leur fiabilité était douteuse. Richard Sorge est un journaliste allemand et soviétique. En poste en Allemagne et au Japon, il est surtout connu pour son travail d'espion au Japon au service de l'URSS, avant et au début de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Son nom de code au NKVD était "Ramsay". De 1933 à 1934, Sorge édifie au Japon un réseau pour collecter des informations au profit du NKVD. Sorge rejoignit officiellement le parti nazi, le parti national socialiste (NSDAP), et travailla comme agent de l'Abwehr à l'ambassade allemande locale.
