In der Wiener Polizeidirektion werden Holmes und Watson von Zentralinspektor Rudolf von Götz empfangen. Als erstes nehmen sie den Tatort, die kaiserliche Schatzkammer, in Augenschein. Holmes entwickelt eine erste Theorie zu dem Diebstahl.
