Dark Island begins as the Napoleonic wars are drawing to a close. The year is 1815. On the battlefield near Waterloo, a surgeon-major in the Highland Brigade tends the mortally wounded padre.
When the wars are over, to honour a promise to his dying friend, Aeneas Graham, the surgeon journeys to a remote Hebridean island called Erismore.
