The annual gathering of the book club at the start of December is supposed to be a time for relaxation and catching up. But this year, the convivial evening takes a sinister turn. Detective Barton is called to investigate, and he soon discovers the seemingly peaceful club harbours dark secrets and hidden resentments that go back years.

As he delves deeper into the case, he soon realises that there is a history of similar blazes spread out over many years, all within a close area. An idea suggested by pathologist Mortis makes Barton suspect he has the arsonist’s motives wrong.

In the space of 24 hours, everyone he wants to talk to has vanished. Then he receives some post, which makes him believe he could be the next to disappear.
