The Warmest December is the incredibly moving story of one Brooklyn family and the alcoholism that determined years of their lives. Narrated by Kenzie Lowe, a young woman reminiscent of Jamaica Kincaid's Annie John, as she visits her dying father and finds that choices she once thought beyond her control are very much hers to make.

In 1899 Jeremy, a young engineer, leaves a small town in Maine to oversee the construction of a railroad across East Africa. In charge of hundreds of Indian laborers, he soon finds himself the reluctant hunter of two lions that are killing his men in almost nightly attacks on their camp. Plagued by fear, wracked with malaria and alienated by a secret he can tell no one, he takes increasing solace in the company of the African who helps him hunt.

För bästa vännerna Marilyn, Linda och Betty börjar inte december på bästa sätt. Marilyns ex meddelar att eftersom julen faller på hans vecka med barnen vill han bryta traditionen att fira tillsammans och istället fira med sin nya flickvän. Lindas man häver ut sig att han vill skiljas för han har träffat någon annan. Och Betty – hennes cancer är tillbaka... Julen är på intåg men julstämningen är svår att finna när livet har vänts upp och ner. Betty bestämmer sig för att inte berätta för sin familj och vänner om beslutet att vägra behandling, vilket är lättare sagt än gjort.
