Bess and George’s cousin Veronica is getting married to extreme sports enthusiast Xavier Redd, and as a close friend of the family, Nancy has been invited to the wedding. Given the groom’s big personality and love for the extreme, the wedding will take place in Vegas, and the couple plan to take advantage of local sporting opportunities in the week leading up to the big event. Not everyone in the family approves of Veronica’s fiancé, though, especially because of the risk-taking behavior Xavier has introduced her to.

There are three rules in Black River Falls: Don’t break curfew unless you want the monsters to find you. Don’t ask questions, no matter what. And when someone goes missing, don’t go looking. Joey Barnes obeyed those rules, until the day her mother vanished without a trace. She’s spent two years secretly hunting for clues, and she’s discovered plenty of things that don’t make sense, even for Black River Falls.

The Hardy brothers and Frank’s new girlfriend, Jones, are attending a local comic book convention on the shore. They meet up with Jones’ friend Harper, a fellow comics super fan, outside the convention. The four of them spend hours running from booth to booth and end the perfect day with pizza at Harper’s short-term rental apartment. Things don’t stay so perfect, though. On the way home, Jones realizes she switched phones with Harper by accident and she's getting some really scary texts. They show up at the apartment the next day to find it totally destroyed and Harper missing.
