The Emerald City of Oz is the sixth book in L. Frank Baum's Oz series. Originally published on July 20, 1910, it is the story of Dorothy Gale and her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em coming to live in Oz permanently. While they are toured through the Quadling Country, the Nome King is assembling allies for an invasion of Oz. This is the first time in the Oz series that Baum made use of double plots for one of the books.

Benjamin is different from other kids - he can read minds and use telekinesis. But it isn’t until he’s sent to summer school on a hidden, underwater continent that he learns the truth. It turns out, Benjamin isn’t really human at all - and the powers he thought made him special, just make him normal. The financial stress of rebuilding their family farm leaves Dorothy Gale's family facing mountains of debt. Upon hearing about her aunt and uncle's situation, Dorothy contacts Princess Ozma and arranges for her and her family to live in Oz, where they can be forever safe and at peace.

Despite Dorothy's many tales of her adventures in Oz, Aunt Em and Uncle Henry never quite believe her stories. Upon finding out the tornado that destroyed their farmhouse in book 1 (The Wonderful Wizard of Oz) is the cause of her Uncle Henry's horrible debt, Dorothy is determined to help her family. She makes plans with Ozma to bring her aunt and uncle to Oz where they may live happily ever after. Unbeknownst to Ozma and our friends in Oz, the Nome King is plotting to take over the Land of Oz and retrieve his magic belt that Dorothy took from him in book 3, Ozma of Oz.

Times are tough in Kansas, forcing Dorothy, Aunt Em, and Uncle Henry to move to Oz. But while Dorothy gives her aunt and uncle the grand tour, the Nome King makes plans to retrieve his magic belt from Ozma.

The time has come for young Tibben to take the test to become the new Potions Master. But he's going to need some help along the way, and the Emerald Dragon might well have to lend a hand...or a wing!
