Institutes of the Christian Religion is John Calvin's seminal work on Protestant systematic theology. John Owen (1616 - 1683) was vice chancellor of Oxford University and served as advisor to Oliver Cromwell. The Death of Death in the Death of Christ is a polemical work, attempting to prove, among other things, that the doctrine of universal redemption is unscriptural. It is divided into four parts. The first sets forth his thesis that the work of Christ on the cross was made for the full and complete salvation of those whom God intended to save.

B. B. Warfield critiques claims of miraculous divine healing and other supernatural gifts in the post-apostolic church. He argues that true miracles ceased with the close of the apostolic age, and he debunks purported signs and wonders from the patristic era through his own time. Warfield maintains that while God still is at work in the world, He now acts through providential means rather than through immediate, miraculous intervention.

George Whitefield's bold "born-again" theology and passionate sermons established him as a key figure during the 18th century. Thomas Boston's Human Nature in Its Fourfold State is often regarded as one of Christian literature's best discourses on human nature, tracing it from its perfect beginnings in Eden, through the fall of man, and on to its final state in eternity.
