Impoverished young aristocrat Eugene de Rastignac is determined to climb the social ladder and impress himself on Parisian high society. While staying at the Maison Vauquer, a boarding house in Paris's rue Neuve-Sainte-Genevieve, he encounters Jean-Joachim Goriot, a retired vermicelli maker who has spent his entire fortune supporting his two daughters. The boarders strike up a friendship and Goriot learns of Rastignac's feelings for his daughter Delphine. He begins to see Rastignac as the ideal son-in-law, and the perfect substitute for Delphine's domineering husband. But Rastignac has other opportunities too....

Father Goriot (Le Père Goriot), published in 1835, is widely considered to be Balzac's finest and most popular novel. It is set in Paris in 1819, after Napoleon's defeat and the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy. Publié en 1835 par Honoré de Balzac, Le Père Goriot est un roman emblématique de La Comédie humaine. Il se déroule à Paris en 1819, principalement dans une pension du 5e arrondissement, tenue par la veuve Madame Vauquer. Parmi les pensionnaires, on y rencontre Eugène de Rastignac, un jeune étudiant ambitieux, et Jean-Joachim Goriot, un ancien vermicellier ruiné par l'amour de ses deux filles, Anastasie de Restaud et Delphine de Nucingen.
