In this fourth volume in The Masks of God series - Joseph Campbell’s major work of comparative mythology - the preeminent mythologist looks at the birth of the modern, individualistic mythology as it developed in Europe beginning in the 12th century AD up through the modernist art of the 20th century. The Masks of God is a four-volume study of world religion and myth that stands as one of Joseph Campbell’s masterworks.

Collected in this special thematic anthology are 25 episodes showcasing notable individuals from Renaissance times to the present day who have transformed the way we think about the world. Included are philosophers such as Descartes, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein and Karl Marx, authors Albert Camus, Iris Murdoch, Mary Wollstonecraft and Simone de Beauvoir, psychoanalyst Carl Jung and many other celebrated thinkers. Also featured are programmes on key philosophical themes, traditions and theories, among them existentialism, empiricism and feminism.

Socrates, perhaps the most famous philosopher of the ancient world, left no writings. The method of philosophical investigation for which he is celebrated has come down to us in the form of dialogues, composed by his student, Plato. The four dialogues in this collection are known by the names of the chief characters in each: Lysis, Charmides, Laches, and Euthyphro. As they fall into a more or less natural group due to the fact that each one deals with a single ethical abstract—friendship, temperance, courage, and piety, respectively—they have been renamed based on their subjects.

Die Politeia besteht insgesamt aus 10 Büchern. Dieses Hörbuch umfasst als zweiter Teil der Politeia-Hörbuchtrilogie die komplette Lesung der Bücher IV,V und VI, in denen Platon unter anderem die Rolle der Frau und der Familie in dem idealen Staat, das Wesen des Philosophen und die Notwendigkeit der Philosophenherrschaft diskutiert. Zusätzlich dazu findet sich als Begleitmaterial ein Aufsatz des renommierten Gräzisten und Platon-Forschers Paul Friedländer über den Kernsatz der Politeia.

Selten nur findet man Sokrates außerhalb der Stadtmauern Athens. Meistens findet man ihn angeregt diskutierend auf Markplätzen, in öffentlichen Gebäuden und in Privathäusern.
