A man named Adolphe visits Leroux at his office at the Morning Journal and delivers to him a chest that was bequeathed to him by his friend Theophraste Longuet. Leroux begins investigating its contents and relates the very strange experience of Longuet. While visiting a famous prison, Theophraste Longuet, a retired rubber stamp manufacturer, is possessed by the spirit of Cartouche, a criminal who plagued Paris in the 18th century.

En Suisse, sur les pentes d'un sommet du Jura, on rencontre une auberge qui a une sinistre réputation. Les anciens propriétaires de l'établissement, les Weisbach, auraient assassiné des voyageurs. Les habitants de la région s'étaient bien doutés de quelque chose, mais les Weisbach terrorisaient si bien toute la région qu'ils n'avaient jamais été inquiétés. Les nouveaux propriétaires de l'auberge profitent de cette réputation pour s'enrichir : car tout le monde veut aller boire un verre dans "l'auberge du sang".

La candidature de Christine Daaé est retenue pour la toute nouvelle comédie musicale qui se tiendra dans le palais Bernier, merveille architecturale du 21e siècle financée par un riche consortium d’investisseurs. Christine aura pour rôle celui de remplaçante de la prima donna, Carlotta Giudicelli. Or voilà qu’à peine quelques heures après son arrivée dans l’opéra, la Carlotta tombe grièvement malade. Christine obtient bien malgré elle le rôle principal.
