The novel was written in four months in 1907, and was serialized and published in 1908 in The Pall Mall Magazine. In 1896, H.G Wells was stimulated to compose this dystopian fantasy about an obsessed scientist and his efforts to artificially accelerate the intellectual development of animals using bizarre medical procedures involving vivisection. Wells described the book as "an exercise in youthful blasphemy."

Bei einer Zugfahrt kommen zwei Männer miteinander ins Gespräch, während dessen der ältere ausführlich über einen Traum berichtet, der ihn durch seinen Realismus an den Grenzen und Vorstellungen der Wirklichkeit zweifeln lässt. Er schildert darin die Vision eines zukünftigen grausamen Krieges, in welchem die 100%ig patriotischen Schafsköpfe von ihren politischen Führern zu unmenschlichen Bestien aufgewiegelt und neuartige Kriegsmaschinerien eingesetzt werden. Wells reflektiert in dieser Erzählung seine Vorahnung des ersten Weltkriegs.
