The D-Day invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe, launched on June 6, 1944, is widely referred to as the longest day of World War Two. Historian Victor Brooks argues that 1944 was, in effect, the longest year for Americans of that era both in terms of United States casualties and in deciding the outcome of war itself.

Arguing that global communications have fragmented national cultures and that multiculturalism, intended to reduce social frictions, is today reinforcing them, Sacks argues for a new approach to national identity, making the case for "integrated diversity" within a framework of shared political values. Britain, he argues, will have to construct a national narrative as a basis for identity, reinvigorate the concept of the common good, and identify shared interests among currently conflicting groups.

On a cold May morning in 1940, Adrian Vincent arrived in France with his battalion. His war didn’t last long. Within five days the Siege of Calais was over, and nearly all his comrades were killed, wounded or, like him, taken prisoner. Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920) was zonder twijfel één van de merkwaardigste figuren van de Nederlandse geschiedenis. Maar wat men ook van hem vond, feit is dat de invloed van deze ‘geroepene’ op de Nederlandse samenleving aanzienlijk was.

Maarten van Rossem schetst in dit hoorcollege de sociaal-economische geschiedenis van de Europese samenwerking na de Tweede Wereldoorlog en de daarmee samenhangende economische integratie van Europa. De meeste West-Europese landen vertonen na 1945 een in hoge mate identiek patroon: sterke welvaartsgroei tot halverwege de jaren zeventig en steeds meer economische samenwerking tussen die landen. Nadat de enorme groeispurt in de jaren zeventig was doodgelopen leidde het neoliberalisme tot verdere groei, maar ook tot de kredietcrisis.
