Story0
Quintus Horatius Flaccus (65-8 BCE) wrote some of ancient Rome's greatest poetry, melding languages and cultures with youthful ideals and a realist's recognition of the dictatorial world around him. Horace is famed for his fine phrases, lyric sex, and guidance on how to live, but he was a poet maddened by war, and many of his most self-revealing poems have rarely been seen. He could be sublime and obscene, amusing and abusive, a model of moderation and anything but.

Here's a biographical profile of John and Horace Dodge, the fabulously wealthy Detroit automobile pioneers who reveled in yachts, estates and producing great cars. Unfortunately, John and Horace's lifestyles were unacceptable to the social elite in Detroit; they regarded the brothers as uncultured, crude and boorish. And they probably were, but it bothered the brothers not at all.

Horace Greeley (1811-1872) was the founder and editor of the influential New York Tribune, whose circulation was among the largest in the United States. On August 19, 1862, Greeley wrote an editorial titled “The Prayer of Twenty Millions"—referring to the number of Northerners loyal to the Union—which criticized Lincoln for his reluctance to use the powers Congress had given him to confiscate southern property, including slaves, in order to emancipate them. The following is President Abraham Lincoln's reply, published in the Daily National Intelligencer on August 23, 1862.
