There is an inexhaustable wellspring of energy available to us in the mometns of quiet stillness when we become aware of the Divine. For decades, Howard Thurman's words have guided many toward this deep inner reservior, from leaders like Dr. Matin Luther King and President Barack Obama to countless people looking for the inspiration to deal creatively with the everyday struggles of life.

In 2010, the family of Howard Thurman (1899-1981) donated a large collection of audio and video materials. 1,400 individual recordings, totaling over 41,000 minutes of audio and video. Most of the recordings are of Thurman himself, being interviewed, delivering lectures, or offering sermons.It is my goal to support the The Howard Thurman Digital Archive, at Pitts Theology at Emory University, with their goals of 1) preserving for future generations 2) making the audio accessible to scholars and the general public and 3) making the content discoverable.I've set a personal goal of listening to ...

Known as the godfather of the civil rights movement, Howard Thurman served as a spiritual adviser to Martin Luther King Jr. and other leaders and activists in the 1960s. Thurman championed silence, contemplation, common unity, and nonviolence as powerful dimensions of social change. But Dr. Lerita Coleman Brown didn't learn about him during her years of spiritual-direction training. Only when a friend heard of her longing to encounter the work of Black contemplatives did she finally learn about Thurman, his mystical spirituality, and his liberating ethic.
