Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer and musician of the Baroque period. He enriched established German styles through his skill in counterpoint, harmonic and motivic organization, and the adaptation of rhythms, forms, and textures from abroad, particularly from Italy and France. Bach's compositions include the Brandenburg Concertos, the Goldberg Variations, the Mass in B minor, two Passions, and over 300 cantatas of which around 200 survive.

Wird es Johann Sebastian Bach dennoch schaffen, sein Werk bis zu den Weihnachtsfeiertagen zu vollenden?

Johann Sebastian Bach lässt sich aus dem Dienst der Kirchenmusik befreien, denn er ist unglücklich mit sich und seinem Leben. Eine musikalische Herausforderung ist das Nest Arnstadt, in dem er hockt, wahrlich nicht. "Ueber Johann Sebastian Bachs Leben, Kunst und Kunstwerke" stellt nicht nur die erste Bach-Biographie dar, das Buch ist generell die erste Monographie über einen Musiker und Komponisten in den deutschen Landen. Die Gestirne für das Verfassen der Biographie standen günstig, war Forkel doch mit dem Hamburger Generalmusikdirektor Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach befreundet und konnte darüber hinaus noch dessen ältesten Bruder Wilhelm Friedemann interviewen.
