Thespian sleuth Charles Paris is his own worst enemy, a louche lush who can resist anything except temptation - especially in the form of women and alcohol. Estranged from his long-suffering wife, Frances, his personal life is shambolic, and as an actor, he's C-list at best. Julia Ford's dream of running a bookshop in the small Somerset town of Biddle Rhyne is fast becoming a nightmare, with the lack of traffic and high running costs. So when the door opens, she hopes it will be a wealthy customer. Rather it is a desperate man—a local accountant whom the police have fingered for murder. Having gained a reputation for solving crimes, Julia takes pity on the disheveled Mr. Cutty—even though he doesn't buy a book—and vows to help him. Yet the victim was seen arguing with Cutty, and named him in her dying breath. No wonder the police are intent on charging him.

Not much happens in Biddle Rhyne, a quiet, picturesque village in the southwest of England. Especially if you don't count the meat raffle on a Thursday night and the odd sheep escaping a field. Particularly as the victim is Audrey White, the cantankerous owner of a nearby garden center. But when the police discover Julia had argued with the woman in the past, she is accused of the crime.

But, best laid plans and all that, things go awry when she stumbles upon the body of Barry, who worked alongside her in the local pub.

Still staying at the Hill House hotel while her beloved home is being rebuilt, Jessica Fletcher finds herself sharing the space for a weekend with a dozen members of a wedding party who have gathered there for a rehearsal dinner. The families of the bride and groom can't stand each other but have agreed to put aside years of long-simmering tension to celebrate the nuptials. Unfortunately, a historic blizzard that dumps nearly five feet of snow on Cabot Cove, leaving everyone stranded. But the hotel guests have bigger things to worry about, because a murderer has shown up uninvited.

As he tries to woo back his semi-detached wife, Frances, and land a few half-decent roles, he finds himself embroiled in murder and mayhem and forced to turn detective. Luckily, his sleuthing is much better than his acting.

Actor, alcoholic and amateur sleuth Charles Paris returns in another quintet of humorous theatrical thrillers. All Charles asks for is a nice juicy part in a successful play - but wherever he appears on the bill, murder and mystery always play a starring role.

Life is good for Charles Paris. He's moved back in with his estranged wife, and has landed a plum stage role as Sir Toby Belch in Twelfth Night. But it can't last. First his attempts to woo Frances fall flat, then the play's director is taken ill with gastric trouble.
