Questo romanzo franco-indiano fa parte di una serie di romanzi storici scritti da Judith Gautier. Questa visse in un ambiente coltissimo ed ha conosciuto direttamente le lingue e i costumi orientali. Non sorprende quindi che si sia dedicata ad un genere di letteratura esotica nella quale è rimasta insuperabile. L'autrice ha creato un'arte tutta personale e riesce a suscitare nel lettore una viva attesa per lo svolgersi della storia, non diminuita dalle descrizioni storiche e naturalistiche.

Judith Gautier (1845-1917) fu una scrittrice francese, figlia dello scrivano Theofile Gautier, e compagna del poeta Pierre Loti. Fu un’orientalista e membro dell’Accademia Goncourt.
